Wine Tasting - Natal Midlands

The Natal Midlands is slowly establishing itself as the second wine route of South Africa.

The Natal Midlands is slowly establishing itself as the second wine route of South Africa. There are a number of wine farms that have joined the Midlands Meander and offer wine tasting as a tourism experience. And the establishmnet of micro breweries is adding beer tasting to the list of attraction in the Natal Midlands too.

Wine Tasting in the Natal Midlands

  • Kleinberg wines has been successfully exporting wines, which are Western Cape wines produced and bottled under their own two labels, since 1996 all the while running their business from Natal. They moved from Pietermaritzburg to the Midlands in 1999. They sell 75% of their wine on the export market, and the balance is distributed throughout KZN from their premises in Birnam Wood. The wine shop was opened last year.
  • The Wine Cellar - A piece of the Cape Wine Route on the Midlands Meander. Speciality wine and coffee shop, stocking a wide variety of wines, liqueurs, beers, coffees and cigars. Cheese platter/picnic basket by prior arrangement, to be enjoyed beside the river. B&B / Self-catering cottage is also available.
  • Nottingham Road Brewing Co. A rustic brewery producing some of the finest beers around. Taste a Whistling Weasel Pale Ale, a Pie-eyed Possum Pilsner, a Pickled Pig Porter or a Tiddly Toad Lager - quality draughts traditionally hand-brewed from secret recipes, using the pure spring water from the Rawdons Estate. One of the must-see attractions of the Midlands Meander! Shop hours 8am - 5pm Daily.
  • Abingdon Wine Estate is located in the picturesque KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, a unique pioneering estate which has positioned itself as a serious single vineyard boutique wine producer in the geographical unit of KZN.Abingdon opened their very popular tasting room and restaurant overlooking the vineyard in August 2009.  It is open Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays for tastings and deliciously fresh lunches.
  • The Stables Wine Estate, on a former thoroughbred stud, is a few kilometres from the centre of Nottingham Road. It is set on farmlands in the picturesque KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, with vineyards stretching out across the old racehorse paddocks and pastures. The majestic uKhahlamba-Drakensberg is in the distance. The scenery and tranquillity on the estate are remarkable and it’s the perfect setting for a wine estate.
