Museums in the Drakensberg and Natal Midlands

  • The Natal Museum - Natural History in Pietermaritsburg. You’re always assured of seeing something new at the Natal Museum Here you’ll view a constant array of fascinating temporary exhibitions and happenings ranging from xenophobic violence to a mixed children’s art exhibition
  • Natal Railway Museum The Natal Railway Museum is in the sweet, misty town of Hilton in KwaZulu Natal. Located at the Hilton station and next to what used to be the main railway line between Durban and Johannesburg. This line is over 125 years old and unfortunately hasn’t been used for over a decade but the museum is hoping to change all that with plans to run trips from the station through the beautiful Natal Midlands Countryside to Howick Falls.
  • Fort Durnford is situated in Estcourt. Fort Durnford was constructed as a frontier post after alarm caused by the Langalibalele Rebellion in 1873. Major Antony Durnford of the Colonial Engineers selected the site and possibly also designed it. Certainly his signature is on the plans. Today the Fort is the home of the Estcourt Museum.
  • Tatham Art Gallery Pietermaritzburg in Kwazulu Natal is home to the Tatham Art Gallery, one of the major SA art museums of contemporary times. The Tatham art gallery was first officially opened to the public in 1903 when Mrs Ada Susan Tatham donated a collection of works to the gallery.
  • Voortrekker Museum The Voortrekker Museum in KwaZulu Natal is a single theme museum with tremendous cultural and historic value. The museum was established in 1912 to commemorates the Voortrekkers, the Battle of Blood river, and the Anglo-Boer War.
  • The Howick Museum T033-330 6124, Tue-Fri 0930-1530, Sat-Sun 1000-1300, small entry fee, is just next to the falls and has a display of Victorian furniture and farm machinery. There is also an interesting collection of military badges.
  • Ladysmith Museum In Ladysmith the Siege Museum includes a diorama depicting the town and surroundings at the time of the 118 day Siege.
  • The main theme of the Winterton Museum is the geology, fauna and flora of the Drakensberg.
