Midlands Meander
The Midlands Meander has grown to more than 160 places to eat, drink, sleep,
shop, play as well as a diverse and fascinating mix of arts and crafts
The Midlands meander has grown over the years into one of the most successful
tourism routes in South Africa. The Midlands Meander caters to every creative
whim with its many arts, crafts, restaurants, shops and activities from which
to choose. This route is from Pietermaritzburg to the world heritage site
-the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Mountains.
Fabulous Places include the Karkloof Farmers market not far from Howick,
while there enjoy the Howick falls, enjoy a picnic packed for you at Horizons
gourmet picnic and visit The Wine Cellar with its stock of over 2500 labels
or enjoy some naturally enjoyed ales at the Nottingham Road Brewery. Talented
individuals offer a destination of activities with the many Art galleries,
Artists Studios, quirky creations from sculptures to ceramicists, hand crafted
wooden furniture and home-grown goods.
The Mission statement of the Midlands Meander is “To provide an enriching
experience for the tourist by means of a varied array of hospitality, arts
and crafts, and outdoor activities in a beautiful and unique country setting” If
you are a water sport lovers the popular Midmar Dam is where you can enjoy
windsurfing, sailing, boating and canoeing and if that is not enough the
Midland Meander Route is also the Battlefields Route boasting the largest
concentration of battlefields in South Africa and attracting thousands of
visitors each year.
Not only is the Midlands Meander home to some of the most well-known
artists in South Africa, like bronze sculptor Sarah Richards, ‘butterfly
crafter’ Astrid Dahl and ceramist Lindsay Scott, but it’s also
a gathering place for a multitude of skills like furniture making, iron
working, weaving, sandal-making and even kite-makers! These works and wares
are displayed in craft shops and art galleries that can be found throughout
the KZN Midlands.
Other activities in the area include hiking, mountain biking, golf, fly
fishing and fly fishing tours, Horse riding and equestrian sports. The Midlands
Meander offers a fantastic array of restaurants and varied accommodation
