Drakensberg
The Drakensberg Mountain range
is the highest mountain range in South Africa, reaching a height of 11,000
feet. Geologically, the Drakensberg is similar to the Simien Mountain range
of Ethiopia, and from the right location one can enjoy all that the exquisite
and enthralling scenery of the drakensberg Mountains offers.
The Drakensberg main attraction is the scenic hiking trails. Each part of
the Drakensberg has its own unique characteristics; however,
there are several spots that come highly recommended for first time visitors.
These include Sentinel peak, located at the top of the escarpment, and the
world renowned Tugela Falls, which cascade into the Royal Natal National
Park below. Cathedral Peak is a hikers paradise. There are many different
routes ranging from a few hours to a few days. From Cathedral Peak, one can
drive to Mike's Pass, on the top of the Little Drakensberg. Spectacular views
of the main escarpment and the surrounding lowlands can be seen here. Cathedral
Peak also boasts the magnificent Didima Valley with its great show of San
Rock art. Giant's Castle was one of the original game reserves in the Drakensberg
region and was declared a reserve in 1903. Giants Castle is popular for its
herds of eland, good rock art sites with easty access and also offers wonderful
range of hikes and walks. Kamberg offers the most incredile rock at site
in the Drakensberg. Guided tours daily and wthe trail to the bushman rock
art is spectacular. Kamberg is also a great fishing location. Its river and
trout dams provide a relaxing atmosphere in these scenic surrounds. Many
well-maintained walks can also be enjoyed here. One of the walks is suitable
for handicapped visitors. Nearby at Mooi River, several dams are open to
trout fishing anglers all year round.
Many guest cottages and bed and breakfasts offer
accommodation for those who enjoy a quaint atmosphere while visiting the
area. Additional Attractions include the Drakensberg Boys' Choir School
where weekly performances are given. The

by the Bushmen. The Drakensberg caves have some 40,000 works of art, making
them the largest collection of such works on earth. With so much to offer
