Antbear Guest House
Lodge accommodation in the Central Drakensberg near to Giants Castle
This private little boutique hotel is perhaps the nicest accommodation we
have ever seen in South Africa. Andrew and Conny run the Antbear Guest House
and infuse the character, charm and hospitality that is unsurpassed by any
other venue. Its little wonder that Tripadvisor.com rates the Antbear Guest
House as the number 1 accommodation for the Drakensberg region.
The Antbear Guesthouse is a thatched, whitewashed cottage built high on
a natural platform overlooking the Bushmans River and Giants Castle. The
view is dramitically spectacular and looks out over Gaints Castle right accross
to the Amphitheatre which is a panoramic view covering more than a hunderd
kilometers. This accommodation is a bit off the beaten track and is more
of an insider tip than just another bed and breakfast. The Antbear Guest
House is a laid back, lovingly cared for kind of place where you feel a sense
of happiness and peace.
The Lodge has been created from an old ruined farmhouse whose previous occupant
was an antbear. The lodge accommodation is made from eco friendly aleranative
matrials like straw bales, thatch stone mud brick and wood. It the sort of
place you would expect Grand Designs to have visited. An the furnishings
are artistic and quirky. We felt influences of Gaudi and Hundertwasser and
then a bit more. All the furniture is hand made at the lodge as well as much
of the art adorning the walls.
There is plenty to do in this area of the Drakensberg too. Walks in the
Drakensberg mountains, visits to bushman paintings, horse trails, canopy
tours and the Midlands Meander to mention but a few. Andrew even has an own
microlight and is passionate about flying over the Drakensberg. He can also
arrange for a hot air balloon flight for that once in a lifetime experience
that should not be missed.
Honeymoon
stays turn into anniversaries just as guests become friends.
Even foreign tourists make it a habit of returning for a second and
third taste of hospitality Anbear style. And its well worth staying a few
extra nights here. |
